Unfortunately, we will not be seeing the British favourite chicken tikka massala grace the menu at McDonalds; in fact on Tuesday 1 September they lost an 8 year legal battle against McCurry, a Malaysian fast-food curry restaurant.
McDonald's first sued McCurry in 2001 after the latter opened for business in 1999; McDonalds have over 170 outlets of their restaurant in Malaysia and felt that the McCurry competition was a cheap "micky-take" and "rip-off" infringing on their trademark
The court battle which has spread from the High Court to the Federal Court, finally ruled in absolute favour of the owners of McCurry stating that McDonalds did not have sole right for the 'Mc' prefix.
The McCurry restaurant has always insisted that the 'McC' has always stood for 'Malaysian Chicken Curry', rather than just a copy of the famous all-American food giant.
Mr P. Suupiah explained that the 8-year legal battle had taken its toll on his business plans and now that McDonald's had finally accepted the courts verdict, he can now resume his plans to expand his restaurant business.
