Caretaker injured after no ladder training

A school caretaker is suing his employers for up to £50,000 in compensation following his fall from a six foot step ladder as he was not shown how to use it safely. The caretaker did however admit that he has used other ladders during his 30 years as a caretaker but had never suffered a mishap.

The accident occurred whilst the 73 year old man was removing a display from a wall in the gym at the primary school where he works. The fall caused him to spend time in intensive care after he fractured his skull, broke a cheekbone and split one of his kidneys.

The caretaker who is suing the county council for damages of at least £15,000 as he feels that they did not show him how to properly use a step ladder. The council has denied negligence and although the man did sign a letter to say he had had ladder training, he was only warned not to stand on the top of the ladder or three metres off the ground.
