When you are out in your car and you have to stop at a level crossing or you are stuck in traffic do you think about your engine emissions by turning your engine off?
West Sussex county council are trying to reduce emissions by fining drivers who have not turned their engines off at railway crossings or parking.
Traffic wardens will have the power to decide whether your engine is on unnecessarily and if so be able to fine you £20 for doing so.
At this time the council wants to stress that it is only an investigation however, they hope that if this does become a permanent fine that most people will abide by the rule resulting in only a few fines.
As with every rule there will of course be exceptions to this. Lorries with coolers and other vehicles that need to keep their engines on will be excluded.
Concerns have been raise however about the weather conditions hindering drivers. As the council are suggesting we turn our engines off at level crossings for example, what happens when it is the middle of a cold winter when turning the engine off cuts heating to the car or on the other hand in the height of summer cutting the air conditioning from being able to be used! The council is going to have to cover these angles in the investigation period.
