£40,000 has been fined to a power station in Nottinghamshire after one of their cleaners fell from a height in a workplace accident.
The 18 year old cleaner had been cleaning the ducts that supply air to boilers when he unclipped himself from a girder, falling 6.5 meters down a shaft, breaking 11 ribs and a leg. Mr Walker has not been able to return to work since the accident that happened in 2007.
Nottingham magistrates found the man's employees at Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station guilty for not providing Mr Walker with adequate training in the cleaning of the ducts and how to secure himself on the girders to prevent his fall. They had also failed to comply with the Health and Safety regulations for working from a height.
1,000 workers are involved in accidents in the workplace each year, leaving them seriously injured. If employers take out regular risk assessments and the appropriate management in health and safety, many of these cases could be avoided, including Mr Walker's accident.
Lower Premium provides liability insurance to businesses and trades for security against claims made against them in the event of a workplace accident.
