Two skip lorries and a digger were destroyed in a fire which consumed a commercial vehicle repair yard in Walsall. Fire fighters battled to keep the flames at bay before other vehicles where lost to the engulfing blaze.
The repair yard Mountford Norman Commercial Vehicle Repairs was discovered to be alight at around 11pm on Tuesday 22nd December. Four fire crews where eventually called to the scene as the flames slowly ravaged the site and everything in its path.
The cause of the fire is yet to have been determined but it is believed that cylinders containing acetylene were found on the site. Acetylene is a gas used for welding and unless properly stored in a cooling facility can be incredibly unstable and prone to explosions.
Owner of the site, Norman Mountford explained that he got a phone call at 10.30 informing him that "there was a fire in the yard" and he said that he went straight down to the site when he heard of the incident.
