A delivery company has been fined after one of their commercial vehicle drivers was injured after hauling materials from his van.
The driver of the delivery vehicle who was working for a stone company, had to take make a delivery of slabs, weighing 220 kilograms. The accident happened when he was lifting out three of the many slabs that he was delivering to a stonemason. He pulled 3 slabs out and the whole load collapsed on top of him.
The right arm of the delivery driver had to be amputated following the accident, all because he had to untie a whole stack of slabs just to remove the three he required. The company, Colin Parker (Masonry) Ltd, were fined with £3,000 and ordered to pay £10,603 in costs.
Colin Parker (Masonry) Ltd, pleaded guilty to breaching sections 2(1) and 3(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, which included not having a sensible procedure in place for unloading the slabs. A racking system has now been put in place so each delivery can easily be accessed and removed.
