Diesel thefts on the increase highlighted as farmers wife dies in raid

A farmer’s wife from Durham has collapsed and died of a heart attack after her and her husband caught thieves stealing their red diesel.

The woman’s son was also left with head injuries and a broken hip after being run over by the thieves.

With the average cost of diesel now hitting 131p per litre on the forecourts the thefts of red diesel have shot up by 30 per cent in the last 5 months alone.

It is not just agricultural supplies of red diesel that are thieves are targeting with hauliers reporting a rise in the number of fuel thefts from their vehicles.

The surge in thefts can also be seen with the increasing number of drive aways from petrol stations as drivers are resorting to more desperate measures to beat the cost of refuelling their vehicles.

And as fuel costs continue to soar then the current epidemic will carry on getting worse, with more people willing to take the risk to save 70 to 90 pounds for a full tank of fuel.
