Two employees her been awarded compensation after been exposed to dangerous fumes at work.
The two women from Cumbria suffered flu-like symptoms and sinus headaches. They felt unwell for over a year when they discovered fumes in a soldering flux was the cause of their problems. They worked as production operatives, where they would use lead-free solders and tin lead solders as part of their job making electrical components. A faulty extraction fan meant the women were exposed to high level of fumes from a cleaning agent used to facilitate soldering.
One woman received £12500 in compensation while the other one has been awarded an undisclosed amount of money. Both women are angry that their employer was aware of the faulty extractor fan and did nothing about it. They have been sick for over a year and have since left the jobs they loved so dearly.
The courts ruled it is important for employers to ensure their staff is protected from all health and safety risks. These members were exposed to toxic fumes, which are not deadly in themselves, but they can significantly deteriorate their lives from not feeling well.
