Research carried out by the Police Federation has estimated that during the recession Burglaries and other property crime could rise by a quarter, however a representative for rank and file officers has commented that there will not be enough officers to respond with the increase.
The home office however, since 1997, has said that figures show there are 15,000 more officers and the numbers are rising.
The chairman of the Police Federation has commented that with crime rates set to increase as the recession deepens, politicians need to sit up and take notice of the figures and unless the police officer strength is increased over the next three years the resilience of the service could be damaged.
According to other figures from policing minister Vernon Coaker, crime rates have fallen by 40 since 1997. There has been no change in the number of break-ins and with the new Police Community Support Officers (PSCO) in neighbourhoods there is now knowledge and flexibility to tackle local crimes.
