Floods could be reduced by farmers

Farmers in East Devon have been working alongside East Devon Council and Devon County Council to try and reduce the risks of flooding to homes and businesses in the area by improving the soil structure of the land.

In October last year, 350 properties and businesses in East Devon were affected by flooding after heavy rain hit the area. A study carried out by the Environmental Agency discovered that 80 percent of the homes that suffered were affected by surface water runoff and small streams as the water had no where to run due to the soil of the surrounding land.

The Environmental Agency and Devon Flood Recovery Group have teamed up with the farmers to change the way in which they use their land. Soil that has been compacted by the farmers from the use of machinery and livestock does not allow water to be absorbed, by making the soil loose after harvest up to 50 millimetres of ran will be immersed in to the land.
