Small businesses have been urged to save their money and shun expensive health and safety consultants in favour of state run advice.
It is felt that many small businesses are unnecessarily contributing to the £700m plus industry of health and safety support specialists.
Savings of £100m plus could be made by small businesses in bringing their health and safety work in-house or turn to the Health and Safety Executive for advice or guidance.
However consultancy firms have hit back at the Government criticism by saying that they provided a service to specific businesses as the free Government information was of a standardised nature.
Also they said that many small businesses did not have the staff to run their health and safety programs in-house and were only to happy to outsource them so that they could get on with the job in hand of making money.
