House raid discovers snake den

A raid on a house in Essex following a tip off that the owner was importing endangered spices has banned a man from keeping wild animals for 10 years.

Snakes and scorpions were found in the home, including a gaboon viper, an Egyptian cobra, buthid scorpions and a Siamese spitting cobra, leading to fines of £325 and costs of £1450.

Licenses must be applied for keeping dangerous wild animals so that the environmental health are able to ensure that risks to public safety do not arise. They also need to ensure that the welfare of animals is safeguarded.
