A Burton landlord has been prosecuted after an elderly tenant of his died from carbon monoxide poisoning from an unchecked gas appliance.
The landlord, Shahid Hussain, was ordered to pay £40,000 fine and £44,500 in costs after pleading guilty to breaching Section 3(2) of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and failing to maintain and keep records of gas appliance safety in properties in three areas of the city.
The Health and Safety Executive used the case to highlight to other landlords the need to get their gas appliances checked and keep relevant documentation up to date.
