It would seem that we have finally receives a piece of good news about the recession, as many of us tighten our belts employees are less likely to bunk off work and pull an infamous 'sicky.' Rife absenteeism often a prickly issue with employers is seeing a downturn in absent employees due to ill health.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) issued a report speculating that the average absent employee cost the economy £692 a year and most sick staff complained of stress, musculoskeletal and flu-like symptoms.
The common 'cold' has often been the stereotyped excuse for bunking employees, however with the current pandemic of swine flu ravaging the country's population many are questioning the positive connotations of the reports results.
Many employees may feel pressured to struggle into work even if they are actually ill because of the risk of losing a day's wage or even more drastically their job. They then pose a risk of infecting the rest of the company's staff.
This obviously contravenes the Health and Safety Executives advice for employers to encourage staff showing flu-like symptoms to stay at home and if necessary to diagnose themselves using the new NHS swine-flu hot line.
However, good news to the economy because as the number of man-days is decreased from 8 days per year to 7.4 days, this could mean less money is lost in absenteeism.
