Lessons in mass claims to be learnt

The coal mining claims fiasco has seen former miners wait for up to 10 years for their claims to be settled, with most even dying before receiving their claims and resulting in over £1bn being paid out to solicitors.

Forecasts prepared by the British coal corporation, for the number of claims and liabilities to be paid out for miners suffering Chronic Obstruction Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Vibration White Finger (VWF), under estimated the volume by more than 300, with a total of three quarters of a million claims being paid out to former miners, their widows, or estates.

The government committee has warned that lessons need to be made from the failures of this mass claim. Even more surprising than the lengthy claims period, is the cost of the legal fees that have been accumulated by the claimant’s legal representatives. Which once all of the claims are settled will be around £1.3bn.
