Last weekend saw the launch of the Mercedes Driving Academy. The Academy teaches young people how to drive before they are legally old enough to take their driving test.
Children wishing to participate in the scheme must be at least 12 years old or 1.5 metres tall. Students are given real lessons and theory tests on a practice track with a professional instructor. The scheme works like the belt system in judo with different colour belts being awarded as the child progresses. Once a pupil has achieved the black belt they are considered capable of passing the national driving test.
Young drivers are responsible for a quarter of all road deaths in the UK although they only constitute a small percentage of the driving population.
Mercedes is currently negotiating with an unnamed insurance company to offer a lower premium to graduates from their academy.
