Mini Plant in Cowley cuts 850 jobs

On Monday, 850 of the casual staff that worked at the Cowley Oxford Mini Plant were laid off as BMW decided to cut weekend working.

850 people were found jobless after union leaders announced an hour before the end of their shift that their duties were no longer required.

The angry workers, some of whom have children and mortgages to pay caused havoc at the Mini plant in Oxfordshire by hurling food at the BMW managers and causing damage to the vehicles.

The cuts were the beginning of a weeklong shut down at the car production plant as the recession hits another car manufacturer.
