The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) are under pressure from the Freight Transport Association (FTA) to publish a list naming and shaming the worst foreign hauliers who continually break UK haulage regulations.
According to the FTA the move would allow UK companies to know the extent of foreign operator’s compliance or law breaking when awarding haulage contracts.
The UK Governments own statistics show that foreign hauliers are entering the country with either defects to their vehicles or exceeding regulations regarding drivers’ hours or weight limits.
The ever more worsening record of foreign hauliers working in the UK has always been condemned by the FTA who point to new statistics that reveal 44 people were killed in the UK and 1,300 injured in accidents with foreign lorries in 2006.
The FTA’s campaign has been hampered by the Government themselves in the decision to delay implementing roadside fines of foreign vehicles until 2009.
This would have been seen as a start in tackling the road safety issue as well as helping the UK transport industry from unfair competition as foreign operators have lower fuel costs with minimum to no maintenance costs.
