Newport faces hard recovery

The Government has declared the Welsh city of Newport as a city that may be worst affected by the recession. In a report released by the Government there are several town and cities that have been reported as either struggling or in a strong position. It discusses how the recession has left some parts of the UK worst affected than others, creating an uneven recovery.

The recession has brought with it a collapse in the UK's finances resulting in heavy job losses and a high number of businesses declaring bankruptcy.

Newport has been labelled as a struggling city for its lack in qualified professionals with only 83% of the population having formal qualifications. This figure has meant that the city has a poor business base leading to a high number of businesses failing and a lack of new starters entering the market.

The chief executive for the Centre for Cities, Dermot Finch said: "We face an uneven recovery. Party leaders need to wake up to the reality that some cities will still feel in the middle of a recession until well after the election. The next government needs to help these struggling cities fix the basics like improving schools and public transport so they can attract new business and jobs."
