Following the prosecution of a laundry in Essex, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned companies that they must comply with the standard workplace safety procedures, to minimise the risk of an employee being injured.
The Essex laundry was fined £30,000 after a work place accident involving an employee, who was attempting to fix a washing machine. The machine, which had an item of clothing stuck was dislodged, causing the machine to restart. The worker was trapped, causing him serious burns and injuries. The laundry was also fined £15,000 in court costs.
Health and Safety guidelines should be followed at all times and procedures put in place with employers ensuring that their workers are not fixing dangerous machinery manually. If risk assessments and adequate training are put in place there is less chance of accidents occurring.
