School tower-crane crash

A school in Durrington West Sussex witnessed the collapse of a tower crane on February 11 2005, however it has taken four years for the company responsible of negligence to be fully prosecuted.

Two men lost their lives when the tower crane collapsed because a third untrained and unsupervised worker had failed to correctly secure two bolts on the crane vital to its structure when on the move.

As the crane turned Gary Miles and Steve Boatmen fell to the ground sustaining multiple injuries, which ultimately led to their untimely deaths.

Eurolift, responsible for supplying the tower-crane was found guilty of breaching the Construction Regulations 1996 and was sentenced to over £300,000 worth of fines in June 2009.

The Health and Safety Executive commented that the incident could have been avoidable had the employers taken the time to fully train and supervise staff and all mantling and dismantling of tower cranes should only be carried out by qualified staff.
