Following reports last week that British Airways staff were concerned about future unstable pay levels as the company made plans to revitalise their employment scheme, the airline has released plans to cut short-haul in-flight meals.
This is only one of the many cut-backs the airline is making as it announces the £148 million pre-tax loss in the last 3 months. A BA spokesperson blamed the “challenging trading conditions” as many consumers are pulling in the reins on spending.
The airline will only offer snacks and drinks like many of its competitor short haul flights have been practicing for years. However BA’s other competitor airlines Lufthansa, KLM, Air-France have also announced losses as the recession bites the industry.
BA has been in negotiations with staff all summer over the employment row and if a resolution is not agreed the airline may witness several strikes by its 14,000 cabin crew. They have already cut staff by 1,450 since March through voluntary redundancy, more part time and reduced overtime.
However many travellers argue that the loss of the in-flight meal will be sorely missed. In fact BA has gone one-step further and will now only have a bag of nuts to offer the hungry passenger.
