A tradesman from Newton Aycliffe is to face charges of arson in court after setting a house on fire because he failed to carry out the planned work. Kevin McGill told police at the time that he had set the house on fire in an attempt to cover up the fact that he and a partner did not carry out the contracted work because they had been moonlighting.
Mr McGill later denied the confession and now stands in court under the charges of arson.
In court the jury where read out the original confession by Mr McGill, which told how the day before the letting agent wanted the keys back to the property. Upon realising that they did not have enough time to complete the work they proceeded to the burning of the house in an attempt to both cover up their failure and obtain the job again in the future.
Fortunately fire crews where quick to react to the emergency call from a local resident and were able to extinguish the fire before any major damage was caused. Unfortunately for the two workers this meant that police could see the petrol and toilet paper left where they had attempted to torch the house.
