Compensation has been awarded for age discrimination after a woman claimed that her employers dismissed her for being too young.
The woman, who was 18 years old at the time, was recruited as an office administrator for an engineering firm. During her three month probationary period she was asked to leave the premises immediately without any notice.
The employer is said to have told her that they needed an older, more experienced person to do the job; however they claim that she was dismissed on the grounds of her capability.
Her claim was held by the employment tribunal who commented that the company had relied upon a stereotypical approach that capability comes down to experience and experience is down to age.
£5,000 was awarded for injury to feelings and £5,000 for her loss of earnings, plus two weeks wages as the company failed to provide her with written particulars of her employment.
The compensation claim was increased by 50 as the employers did not follow any statuary procedures.
